On Saturday 18th October, a group of students volunteered to clean-up Llangennith beach on the Gower.
Students braved the windy weather to litter-pick to get rid of unsightly cans, plastic bottles and rope thrown ashore by the sea. Llangennith beach suffers badly with marine litter and volunteers did a great job collecting about 30 bags of rubbish. The beach clean was held in partnership with the charity, ‘Keep Wales Tidy.’
The event provided students with the opportunity to get out into the countryside and explore the beautiful Gower whilst helping to preserve the coastline. After the clean-up, volunteers enjoyed a nice lunch in the café and then went on a walk with spectacular views.
The SU Vice-President who attended the trip, Stefan Kelly, said, ‘It was a fantastic day, great to get out of Cardiff for a while to get some fresh air and to help clean the beach.’
The beach clean is part of Cardiff Met Student Union’s new initiative to offer volunteering projects to students. These projects provide students with the opportunity to support the local community, enjoy a new experience, meet new people and they can also boost their CV. Other volunteer projects that the Students’ Union is planning include transforming a primary school outdoor area and re-painting a community hall.
