The first BUCS Wednesday of 2015 saw 32 Archers teams back in competition after a whole 49 days since the last BUCS action. 16 fixtures took place on home turf with a further 16 away trips for our teams.
Mikey Cox for Men’s Tennis 1st team played out of his skin with Mike Castle to take a win in the doubles away at Bristol, unfortunately losing a tight singles match 6-3 7-5. For the 2nd team Skene Matthews maintained his unbeaten run in the singles this season, whilst Lawrence Minton won another doubles match in his 2nd outing for the team having moved up 6 spaces in the squad ranking list.
Hockey Women’s 1st team took on Gloucestershire 1st on Cyncoed’s blue astro coming out victorious with a 4-2 win, putting them in 2nd place in Western 1A only 3 points behind Exeter who they face next week with 2 games in hand as well. The 2nd team beat Bristol away 3-2 while the 3rd team lost 2-0 to Swansea at home. The Men’s first team battled out a 2-2 draw away to Oxford with the 2nd and 3rd teams both losing to Cardiff Uni and Royal Ag respectively.
Netball 1st team started the year with a win against Cardiff Uni beating the local rivals 33-28, putting them top of the table with a game in hand against their opposition who sit in 2nd place. Wins were also recorded for the 3rd and 5th teams who won 44-24 and 44-16, with the 4th and 6th teams both starting their year with defeats at the hands of Cardiff Medics.
The Men’s Rugby 4th team started off winning ways for home Rugby fixtures this week beating SWP&C 3rd team 29-12. Then the floodlights of Cyncoed Campus lit up the pitch where the Men’s 2nd team beat SWP&C 1st team 21-15 in our Wednesday Night Lights featured game this week. Elsewhere the Men’s 1st team lost 5-45 away to Hartpury and the Women’s 1st narrowly lost out to Gloucestershire Uni 1st team.
Women’s Football secured the Southern Premier League Title with a game to spare, through a 3-2 win away against Hertfordshire 1st team. The girls battled in windy conditions to claim the title they lost out on last season after head to head rulings. The 2nd team kept themselves in contention for 1st place in their league after a 2-2 draw against SWP&C 1st team, both goals coming from fresher students; Stacey Ayling and Danni Jones.
Playing in the same league means that Men’s Football 3rd and 4th team must face each other twice this season, this time the 3rd team coming out on top putting 7 goals past their club mates with no return. The 1st team had a top of the table clash against Hartpury unfortunately losing 3-1 keeping the Archers in 2nd place.
Men’s Lacrosse remain unbeaten in the Western 2A with 5 wins from 5, claiming this weeks win from UWE beating them 14-10. Women’s Badminton beat Gloucestershire away 6-2 while the Men’s team drew 4-4 away to Swansea. Both Men’s and Women’s Basketball 2nd teams won with the Men beating SWP&C 81-68 at home and the Women travelling to the same team to beat them 62-45.
