On Wednesday 15th October, a group of students helped to clean the beach at Ogmore-by-Sea whilst enjoying the unusual October sunshine and fresh air.
On Wednesday 15th October, a group of students helped to clean the beach at Ogmore-by-Sea whilst enjoying the unusual October sunshine and fresh air.
The students picked up litter to get rid of cans, plastic bottles and rope thrown ashore by the sea. The beach clean was held in partnership with the charity, ‘Keep Wales Tidy.’ South Wales Police also joined in with the litter pick.
Student volunteer, Emily Matthews, said about the project, “I’m glad I took part in the litter pick, not only did we visit somewhere beautiful and somewhere I have not been before, but I met some fun and like-minded people. It felt really good helping the environment, even though we were a small team, each little gesture goes toward a cleaner and happier world!”
The beach clean was organised by the UMAX service which is part of Cardiff Met Students’ Union. UMAX organises a variety of one-off and on-going volunteer projects which provide students with the opportunity to support the local community, enjoy a new experience, meet new people and also helps to boost their CV. One-off projects like the beach clean are great for students who would love to get involved with some volunteering but don’t think they have time to make a regular commitment to a project.
Other one-off volunteer projects that the Students’ Union is planning include re-painting the classrooms of a local primary school and helping a dog shelter by taking the dogs for a walk.
