Serving as the CSM school representative at Cardiff Met SU this year has been a truly rewarding and enlightening experience. I am honoured to have had this opportunity to work closely with students, the university, and the sabbatical officers. Engaging with my peers, advocating for their needs, and contributing to the overall improvement of student life has been immensely fulfilling.
I made it my goal to create a welcoming and supportive environment for every student during my time, whilst also making it a priority to communicate openly and actively sought out input in order to quickly resolve any problems or concerns.
This year, I assisted with several projects aimed at enhancing the student experience. One of the key initiatives was the Speak Week project. This included collecting data from both campuses and from every student that was willing to be part of the survey. I also did the analysis for the overall themes of the Speak Week project. Additionally, I won the Vice President’s Award for the 2023/24 Academic Year for all my work this year.
In meetings with university officials, such as the Pro Vice Chancellor and the ADSE for CSM, I represented the interests of students as their representative. I put a lot of effort into making sure that students' opinions were heard and that their issues were successfully handled.
Additionally, I organised surveys to give students a place to freely express their ideas and opinions and spoke in front of many of their classes to promote the Student Union.
To any future representatives, I would emphasize the importance of being proactive and approachable to everyone. Always be open to listening to your peers and take their concerns seriously. Remember that your role is to support the student body and sabbatical officers, so strive to be their advocate and ally. Finally, collaboration is key. You should work closely with other representatives and the Students’ Union as whole to achieve common goals.
I would encourage every student to participate as much as they can in campus life. Participate in events, join sports clubs and societies, and make use of the resources at your doorstep. Making friends and participating in extracurricular activities will improve your time at university and provide you with useful skills.
Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it, whether it's for personal, professional, or academic reasons. Make the most of every chance and relish the ride since your university experience is what you make of it
