A flawless season for the Netball 1st team, can surely only be completed by winning the BUCS Championship on Wednesday (25th March). Ahead of the final we caught up with 1st team coach Nia Jones, former Cardiff Met player and current Celtic Dragons and Wales player.
How has your BUCS season gone this year?
It's gone as we'd hoped but maybe not how we had expected! The players and I agreed prior to the season that the BUCS Championship was our objective and that we had the ability to get to the final - but we knew it would be tough depending on squad injuries/unavailabilty due to international commitments. We finished the league season as BUCS Premier South Champions with a fantstaic record of 10 wins for 10 games and a goal difference of +190. We're really pleased with our consitency and progress as a group with each match and are looking forward to the final.
Are there any stand out performers this year for your team?
I can honestly say that each and every one of the girls have played a significant part in our performances throughout the league season and the Championship rounds. We have a fantastic blend of strengths in the squad that range from 4 freshers to 3 senior internationals, but it allows us to select combinations based on combating the opposition. We are far from a one dimensional team which makes us unpredictable to our opponents. Special mentions have to go to our Centre and masters student Kyra Jones who is an experienced Welsh International and Superleague player for Team Bath, she controls the tempo of our play and leads through her energy and assists. Also our promising GS and GA Georgia Rowe and Phillippa Yarranton have produced some fantastic shooting stastistics in high pressured situations despite them being First year students.
What would winning the final mean to you and the team?
We feel like the Netball BUCS system is a fantstic campaign as it's one of the few sports where you compete against International and National Superleague players each week. It is an elite level competition that the girls train for vigorously and seriously care about their progress each wednesday. It's no fluke that we have made it to the final with 0 losses and that is credit to the girls' athletisicm and mental strength. We have had some close and intense matches and have come through strongly so to win the final match would be an amazing squad and club achievement.
What's going to be key to ensure you beat your opponents? (anyone to watch out for?)
It's important for us to remain focused on ourselves and our strengths as opposed to Leeds. They have some key players that I and a couple of the players know know well from playing Yorkshire Jets and England in the past, but again we have strength in every unit on court and a ready bench who we know can make an impact when called upon. I have every confidence in our team's fitness and technical ability it will just be a measure of our resilience and self belief during critical moments on the day, but we're ready for it.
