You may have seen Amy Wright-Hamilton around campus, on posters and flyers and maybe even in person. We caught up with Amy to find out what it's like to be one of the faces of Cardiff Met Sport and what her sport is all about.
Can you describe (to someone who doesn't know) what Karate is?
Karate is a form of martial arts which involves both punching and kicking. Within the modern competition side of it, there are two different individual types of karate you can do. Kumite, which is one on one fighting and Kata, which is when you have to imagine you have an opponent... it like a number of moves made into a routine.
How did you get in to Karate?
When I was about 8 years old my best friend started it up. I decided to join with her and have stuck with it ever since.
What is your biggest achievement so far?
When I was 17, I won the world championship for 15-17 year old, bringing home 3 gold and a bronze. I have just come back from the senior Europeans with a silver and a bronze!
Describe what the Senior European Championships, were like and how you got on?
It was definitely a step up from the under 20's section, the punches were harder and the level was so much higher! I was extremely nervous but managed to come back with a silver and a bronze!
How do you find the balance between sport and university?
It is quite difficult especially when I take a week out for a competition. I just try to set goals before I go and get ahead of all my work before. When I come back lecturers are more than willing to meet up with me to go through missed lectures, which is very helpful!
What is coming up next for you in your sport?
There is an international competition next year which I am hoping to get selected for. The selections are at the end of this month!
Good luck to Amy in her next competition, and if want to keep up with Amy's impressive results you can find them right here on the AU website or via Twitter @CardiffMetAU
