There were a mixture of cup and league matches for the Archers teams this week, which included some well deserved 'cupsets' with lower league Cardiff Met teams getting victories against higher ranked opponents. Men's Football 3rd team provided the biggest win on the pitch this Wednesday where they beat the Southampton Universities 1st team 4-0, earning themselves a place in the 3rd round of the Western Conference Cup. The Men's 2nd team also made their way through to the 3rd round of the same cup by beating Aberystwyth 2nd team 4-2 with goals from Willie (2), Howard and Bowler.
On the netball courts it was a great BUCS Wednesday all round with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team's all winning. The first team earned an away victory against Brunel which ended 47-31. The 2nd and 3rd team took a trip to Bristol where the 2nd's beat Bristol 2nd team 40-30 to gain 3 points in the league and the 3rd team beat UWE 3rd team 45-21 to progress to the next round of the cup. The 4th team battled hard and stepped up their performance levels Away to Exeter's 2nd team, which was helped by support from the Rugby girls after their game against Exeter also (19-0 win). The netball girl's were unable to beat the Exeter side who are a few divisions above them but the close scoreline illustrated the strong performance from each individual (38-33)
Men's Basketball claimed their first victory of the season beating Bristol 1st team 64-62, with the outcome being decided in the dying seconds, in the Archers arena. The women were away to King's College in London and bought back the win with a 65-40 result; Judit Fritz had 16 points closely followed by player of the match Ellie Lester who added 13 points, hitting the big shots with efficient floor shooting.
Men's Rugby 1st team suffered a loss to Cardiff Uni (14-29) which continues a difficult BUCS season so far which has been plagued with injury, causing difficulty in maintaining performance in both BUCS and National League. The 2nd team earned a good result beating Bath 2nd team 29-17 and the 4th team also won 36-8 against Bristol 5th team.
Hockey are enjoying playing home fixtures on the new blue Tiger Turf and it showed in Wednesday's results. Men's hockey 2nd's hit a massive 12 goals past Aberystwyth 2nd team and the Women 1st team hit 4 past Bournemouth 1st's. The Women's 3rd team took Cardiff Uni 5th to penalties after a 2-2 draw at full-time but unfortunately couldn't get the result. This was after a Monday night fixture where the Women's 2nd team faced our own 3rd team, and after holding it to 1-0 at half time the 2nd team hit 3 more in the 2nd half to finish the game 4-0. Elin Owen earned player of the match with good movement and communication throughout and also netting twice, as well as Vicki Moulder scoring her first goal.
The weather caused several games to be postponed including Women's Football 1st, Women's Rugby 2nd and Men's Football 1st all getting a well deserved Wednesday rest day. Elsewhere Volleyball played their first BUCS fixture of the season in the Russell Rees Gym, beating Gloucestershire 2nd team 3-2.
