Sport: Women's Rugby; 1st XV Captain

Position: Flanker

Interesting fact: Alan Shepard is my best friend.

Megan Oaten is in her final year at Cardiff Met, studying Sport and PE, she describes what it's like to be a student athlete, captain of a very successful rugby team and how she envisions this year for Cardiff Met WRFC.

Can you summarise a typical day for a Cardiff Met women's rugby player?

"Well on most days we wake up early for focus (group), which isn't so bad and definitely helps our performance, we then would go for a team breakfast perhaps and catch up on all the goss that goes with being in such a tight knit group. I would then spend the day in between lectures and catching up on assignments, and in the evening there would be a skills training session which can be lots of fun, it's normally a hectic schedule but to get results you have to put in the effort"

Do you find the balance between working and playing difficult?

"To begin with it was but after a while you just understand that you have to do your work first and as soon as you get it, to be able to make time for training and playing later"

You recently claimed a big victory at the Blues Uni Cup, what was it like to play at Cardiff Arms Park, and how was it to captain the winning side?

"It was great, it's so interesting to be able to play at such prestigious places, like playing at Twickenham last year, it's such a great atmosphere and with the supporters cheering, I know it can feel like winning is a certainty, that day, the girls played brilliantly which made my job was easier, I'm just there to make sure everyone stays on track and that everyone is working for each other"

You mentioned Twickenham last year, do you see your squad reaching the same stage (women's bucs finals) again this year?

"I think we definitely are capable of it, and I really hope we do, and win! As it's my last year and I'd love to captain the side that did win the final, but we have a long road ahead of us, we've got some new talented freshers and I know that our training is enhancing our performances already, but I wouldn't like to jinx our chances just yet!"
