Wind back the clock 6 weeks and I was in NIAC at the Freshers "W.O.W Event" at the beginning of the University Year, time flies!
So, for me, the 'Cardiff School of Sport (CSS) Rep', what has happened in the journey so far?
The next day, after the W.O.W. Event, seeing hundreds of Freshers pass through the NIAC doors, I had the privilege of tagging onto the end of Richard Tong (Dean of the CSS) 'Freshers Intro' talks. I got to speak to all of our CSS First Year Students, to introduce myself on a more personal level and introduce the role of being a course rep and inform them of how to apply! Within a week of the application form being accessible, almost all the first year course rep positions were fulfilled- Top Class.
This year, the SU provided students with various opportunities to get the 'Cardiff Experience'- I had the opportunity to join a group at the Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre (Pictures have been uploaded on 'Cardiff Met School of Sport Rep' Facebook Page)!
The day consisted of introductions to climbing (which got me cramping straight away- not good!), raging-‘inter fresher’-competition on the speed-climb wall, a 15/20M Leap of Faith (not one for the weak-knee'd) and challenges on the Boulder Walls (the part where you have no guide-rope- health insurance was essential..).
At the beginning of the day, we came together, not knowing each other, from different campuses (and every different countries!) and left united after having a lot of fun!
I'd recommend Boulders to anyone, as a footballer my body is definitely not adapted for climbing but I loved it.
On Tuesday 8th of October, Centro (Cyncoed Campus) was the home of the First Event of The Cardiff Met SU Open Mic Night!
Hosted by myself, I can speak on behalf of all that attended and say there was MUCH talent displayed on that stage! We had 7 Acts; 6 singers and 1 Poet- each, brought something special and original to the stage!
On the night we had a few ‘spectators’ that were enjoying the music and then decided, there and then, to step to the mic and perform!
Story of the night for me was down to Jack Perrett (SPE- Year 3). This man joined us to enjoy the music and watch but he had also been singing at home and practising for 3-4 years in his home but had not yet found the confidence to sing publically, after seeing the other acts perform, encouragement from some mates and a couple of pints knocked back, he stepped to the stage. Let’s say after his performances, you might want to call him Jack ‘Bugg’ from now on!
As promised, each person who came, paid £1 entry and this made up the Prize for our winner. The first crown by Audience ‘Cheer-Volume-ometer’ went to Robbie Burns (SPE- Year 2) who pleased the crowd with some sing-a-long classics.
On the night we had students from different schools mixing under the same interest of hearing quality live music. Straight after it finished to now, I have had acts and spectators telling me about their excitement for the next event so I hope the next event on NOVEMBER 12th in Centro will bring the same vibe!
Course Rep Recruitment!
Through liaising with the SU Office and the CSS Programme Directors, we devised a way of recruiting our course reps! I wiped the CSS ‘books clean’ and began recruiting every course rep from scratch, giving everyone the opportunity to step up and represent their students. We now have in excess of 50 course reps which I’m sure will increase as we fill a few vacancies as this term progresses! Really positive response from students has made my job easy and I am now looking forward to appointing our Lead Year Reps by the end of this week (all course reps will have the opportunity to apply)!
Today, UMAX hosted the Cardiff Met SU Course Rep training day on Llandaff Campus- What a great day!
Despite it being a Saturday, we had a BIG attendance of 100 Course Reps from across the 5 schools and even welcomed reps from Overseas (Egypt, Singapore, Bulgaria and France) from Cardiff Met’s partnering institutions!
From learning more about the SU and the course rep role to physical team-building challenges outside, all-in-all, everyone walked away, ready and enthusiastic to represent their peers over the year ahead!
